Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, established in 1986, was the vision of Padmashree Dr. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He aimed to enhance the quality of medical education and healthcare in the state by creating a dedicated institution for health sciences. Recognizing the need for specialized education in medical and allied fields, he played a key role in establishing the university through Act No. 6 of 1986. Headquartered in Vijayawada, the university has significantly contributed to the advancement of medical education in Andhra Pradesh.

It holds the distinction of being the first university in India exclusively dedicated to health sciences. Over the years, it has expanded its academic offerings, providing undergraduate, postgraduate, super-specialty, Ph.D., and post-doctoral fellowship courses. These programs cover diverse disciplines, including Modern Medicine, Dental Surgery, Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Paramedical sciences.

Since its inception, the number of affiliated colleges has grown from 27 to 271, reflecting its broad reach and impact on healthcare education.
