Dr. Y.S.R. Horticultural University was established by the Government of Andhra Pradesh on June 26, 2007, at Venkataramannagudem, near Tadepalligudem in West Godavari District. It is the second horticultural university in India, created to enhance horticultural productivity, sustainability, and commercialization in Andhra Pradesh, a leading producer of mango, oil palm, chillies, turmeric, and various fruits and spices.
The university initially functioned under the supervision of the Agricultural Production Commissioner and Principal Secretary to the Government, ATM, supported by officials from Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU). It launched three new Colleges of Horticulture in West Godavari, Mahabubnagar, and Kadapa in 2007-08, incorporating UG and PG programs from ANGRAU. By May 10, 2008, it became an independent institution.
Following the Land Grant pattern of the U.S., the university focuses on education, research, and extension. It aims to develop skilled professionals, conduct need-based research, and disseminate advanced horticultural techniques. The research is aligned with eight key areas, including productivity enhancement, sustainability, food safety, environmental protection, export promotion, and post-harvest loss reduction.
The university operates 42 institutions, including four horticultural colleges, four affiliated colleges, seven horticultural polytechnics, 19 research stations, and four Krishi Vigyan Kendras. It actively supports farmers through training programs, demonstrations, and outreach activities, contributing to the state's leadership in horticulture.
Dr. Y.S.R. Horticultural University provides financial support to meritorious students admitted to PG and Ph.D. programs through the university's entrance examination. Each year, 36 PG students and 12 Ph.D. students receive stipends from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. M.Sc. students receive ₹5,000 per month for 20 months, while Ph.D. students receive ₹7,000 per month for 25 months.
Additionally, the university facilitates the distribution of social welfare scholarships for students belonging to SC, ST, BC, and Minority categories. Student data is uploaded to the Jnanabhumi portal, ensuring the seamless distribution of Jagananna Vidya Deevena and Jagananna Vasathi Deevena scholarships.
The university also supports PG students who secure JRF ranks, granting them ICAR scholarships each year. Furthermore, students benefit from the National Talent Scholarship (NTS) under the Agricultural Education Division’s plan scheme, aimed at strengthening higher education in India. This ICAR-funded scholarship is awarded annually to eligible PG students of Dr. Y.S.R. Horticultural University, providing crucial financial assistance to support their academic pursuits.
