Dravidian University, Kuppam

Dravidian University, established in 1997 in Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, was founded to promote and preserve Dravidian languages, culture, and history. The university was the vision of Padma Shri Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, who aimed to advance research and education in Dravidian studies. With support from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry, the institution focuses on folklore, tribal studies, archaeology, literature, herbal sciences, and philosophy.

Originally named Dakshina Bharata Visvavidyalayam, the university received administrative approval from the Andhra Pradesh government, with an initial grant of Rs. 1.75 crores. The 1,000-acre campus, located at a tri-state junction, provides a serene and eco-friendly learning environment. It has grown significantly, expanding from a small setup into a comprehensive institution with eight schools, 17 departments, and five centers.

Recognized under UGC 12(B) status in 2006, the university introduced IT Gurukulam, five-year integrated courses, and rural development programs. It offers 50 UG, PG, and diploma programs, emphasizing employment-oriented education. With initiatives like Rajiv Gandhi Rural Resources Development Centre and World Folklore Day, Dravidian University remains a key institution for linguistic, cultural, and historical studies, enriching South Indian heritage.
