The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Anantapur, began its journey in 1946 at Guindy, Madras, and relocated to Anantapur in 1948. Initially affiliated with Madras University (1946-1955), it later aligned with Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati (1955-1972). In 1972, the college became part of JNT University, Hyderabad, following its establishment by an Act of the State Legislature. In 2008, JNTU was trifurcated into three universities: JNTU Hyderabad, JNTU Kakinada, and JNTU Anantapur. Subsequently, the College of Engineering, Anantapur, was renamed JNTUA College of Engineering, Anantapur, becoming a constituent college of JNTUA.
JNTUA also includes the JNTUA College of Engineering, Pulivendula (established in 2006), and the Oil Technology Research Institute (OTRI), Anantapur (established in 1948), which was renamed Oil Technology and Pharmaceutical Research Institute (OTPRI) in 2016. Another constituent unit, JNTUA College of Engineering, Kalikiri, was established in 2013. Additionally, JNTUA oversees 98 engineering colleges, 33 pharmacy colleges, and 29 standalone MBA/MCA colleges.
