The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) is a premier higher education institution specializing in science and technology, located in Nirjuli, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. Established in 1984, it operates as a deemed-to-be university and is fully funded and managed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The institute functions autonomously under a Board of Management, which includes representatives from the Ministry of Education, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the eight northeastern states. The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh serves as the ex-officio head of the NERIST Society, which comprises education ministers from the region.
NERIST was conceived as a project under the North Eastern Council (NEC) to develop technical expertise in the region. It follows an innovative education model, allowing students to pursue vocational training at the +2 level and progress to higher degrees based on merit and interest. Academic programs commenced in 1986, and since then, numerous graduates in fields like Engineering and Forestry have secured positions in reputed organizations.
The institute is spread over 513 acres and offers comprehensive facilities, including banking services, medical care, educational institutions, and recreational clubs. NERIST continues to play a crucial role in technical education and regional development.
The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) is participating in the AICTE YASHASVI (Young Achievers' Scholarship and Holistic Academic Skills Venture Initiative) Scholarship Scheme for the academic year 2025. This initiative by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) aims to encourage students to pursue technical education in core engineering branches such as Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Mechanical, Agricultural Engineering, and Textile Technology.
Under this scheme, a total of 5,200 scholarships are available annually, with 2,593 allocated for degree courses and 2,607 for diploma courses. Degree students are eligible for ₹50,000 per annum for up to four years, while diploma students can receive ₹30,000 per annum for up to three years.
Eligibility criteria include admission to the first year of a degree or diploma course in an AICTE-approved institution, or second-year admission through lateral entry. Additionally, the candidate's family income should not exceed ₹8 lakh per annum.
NERIST students meeting these criteria are encouraged to apply through the AICTE Scholarship Portal. The institute's participation in this scheme underscores its commitment to supporting students' academic and professional growth in technical fields.
