Rajiv Gandhi University, formerly known as Arunachal University, is the leading higher education institution in Arunachal Pradesh, with over twenty-five years of distinguished service. Established on February 4, 1984, by the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Rono Hills, the university began functioning on April 1, 1985, after receiving academic recognition under Section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission (UGC). It gained financial recognition under Section 12-B of the UGC on March 25, 1994. The university was designated as a Central University on April 9, 2007, following a notification from the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Situated atop Rono Hills, the scenic 302-acre campus offers a stunning view of the Dikrong River and is conveniently connected to National Highway 415 by the Dikrong Bridge. The university provides a wide range of educational programs, including Certificate Courses, Diplomas, Postgraduate Diplomas, Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs.
