The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, one of India's 31 NITs, was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College in Assam. It was later upgraded to an NIT in 2002 and recognized as an Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.
Academic programs commenced in 1977 with an initial intake of 60 students across three engineering disciplines: Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. At the time, the institute had limited infrastructure, including a partially completed hostel, a workshop, faculty and staff quarters, and two Assam-type buildings for classrooms and administration. Under the leadership of Dr. H. R. Chablani, classes began with only four full-time faculty members, operating under the affiliation of Gauhati University. The first batch of students graduated in 1982-83. Over the years, additional programs were introduced, such as Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering in 1983 and Computer Science and Engineering in 1987. The institute later affiliated with Assam University in 1994.
NIT Silchar transitioned into a fully autonomous institution under the Government of India, ensuring financial support for its continued growth. It gained Deemed University status in 2002 and held its first convocation on February 16, 2004, aligning its academic structure with premier institutions like the IITs.
NIT Silchar offers a range of scholarships to support students financially and encourage academic excellence. These scholarships cater to various categories, including merit-based, need-based, and special programs for specific groups.
The Bharti Infratel Scholarship Program (BISP) supports students with disabilities pursuing education in Institutes of National Importance in Northeast India. The Government of Maharashtra Scholarship is available for SC students from Maharashtra. The Hakim Abdul Hameed Scholarship provides financial aid to eligible students.
International opportunities include the MHRD Notification on Chinese Government Scholarships (2019-20) and New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships (2019), offering financial support for higher studies abroad. The Building Energy Efficiency – Higher & Advanced Network (BHAVAN) Fellowships/Internships assist students in research on energy efficiency.
The National Scholarship Portal (NSP-2.0) facilitates applications for ST students seeking higher education funding. Swami Dayanand Charitable Educational Foundation’s Merit-cum-Means Scholarships support students pursuing professional courses like Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, Architecture, and IT.
For research scholars, NIT Silchar provides Ph.D. scholarships with revised emoluments and renewal formats for M.Tech., M.Sc., and Ph.D. assistantships. Additionally, Startup Scholarships encourage students to develop entrepreneurial ventures.
These scholarships collectively help students achieve their academic goals while reducing financial constraints.
