Gujarat University is a legacy of excellence. Established in 1949 under the Gujarat University Act, Gujarat University emerged from the vision of prominent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and Acharya Anandshankar Dhruva. Initially conceived to decentralize education in the Bombay Province, the university has since become a cornerstone of higher education in Gujarat.
Over its seven-decade journey, Gujarat University has seen the creation of seven universities carved from its jurisdiction, including Sardar Patel University and Saurashtra University. Despite this, it remains the largest university in Gujarat, serving over two lakh students across 235 colleges, 15 recognized institutions, and 24 approved institutions.
The university operates as an affiliating body at the undergraduate level while focusing on teaching at the postgraduate level. With 34 postgraduate departments and 221 centers, Gujarat University ensures comprehensive and coordinated instruction under its direct supervision. Its unique external examination system allows working professionals and financially constrained students to pursue education in Arts and Commerce at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Renowned for its academic diversity, Gujarat University offers education across a wide range of disciplines and has grown into a premier institution in India. Its legacy of inclusivity and quality education continues to shape the future of thousands of students.
Gujarat University is dedicated to empowering students by fostering their growth and nurturing their intellectual potential. The university believes in inspiring young minds, instilling confidence in their abilities, and encouraging them to explore new horizons. To support aspiring learners and unlock their true potential, Gujarat University is committed to providing financial assistance to deserving students, enabling them to pursue higher education without financial constraints.
The university offers a range of scholarships for students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including those from SC/ST and other backward classes. With over 30 government-initiated scholarship schemes integrated into its programs, Gujarat University strives to motivate students to excel academically and cultivate a love for learning.
To promote high-quality research, the Government of Gujarat has introduced the SHODH initiative (Scheme of Developing High-Quality Research), which provides substantial financial support to research scholars. Over the past five years, more than 1,000 full-time scholars have benefited from this scheme, receiving a monthly stipend of ₹15,000 and an annual contingency grant of ₹20,000.
Additionally, Gujarat University extends support through the Mukhymantri Yuva Swavlamban Yojana, empowering students to pursue their academic dreams while contributing to the advancement of knowledge and innovation.
