The University of Kashmir traces its origins to 1948 when it was part of the University of Jammu and Kashmir. In 1969, it was formally bifurcated, giving rise to two independent institutions—the University of Kashmir in Srinagar and the University of Jammu in Jammu. Nestled in the picturesque Hazratbal area, the university enjoys a breathtaking location, bordered by the Dal Lake on the east and Nigeen Lake on the west. The expansive 247-acre campus is divided into Hazratbal, Naseem Bagh, and Mirza Bagh, with additional land at Zakura earmarked for future expansion. The serene environment fosters an ideal setting for academic excellence and research.
In its pursuit of accessible education, the university has established satellite campuses in Anantnag (South Campus), Baramulla (North Campus), and Kupwara, ensuring that quality education reaches remote areas of the Kashmir Valley. A sub-office in Jammu further supports students from outside the region.
The university offers a diverse range of programs across multiple disciplines, including Arts, Sciences, Management, Law, Engineering, and Medicine. Recognized for academic excellence, the institution has earned an A+ grade accreditation from NAAC, reflecting its commitment to innovation, research, and quality education.
University of Kashmir offers Scholarships & Financial Assistance to students on the basis of the following points
Merit Scholarships
The University of Kashmir offers merit scholarships to students admitted to various programs. These scholarships are awarded to the top two merit holders in each course. For first-year students, selection is based on performance in the entrance test, while in the final year, it is determined by merit in M.A, M.Sc., M.Com., MLIS Previous, and 1st & 2nd semester examinations. The scholarship is granted from the date of admission until the last examination, with a maximum duration of 12 months.
Research Scholarships
To support advanced research, the university awards four scholarships per department/research center for students pursuing Ph.D. and M.Phil. degrees. In addition to the scholarship, recipients also receive an annual contingency grant to cover research-related expenses.
Student Aid Fund
The university runs a Student Aid Fund to provide financial assistance to deserving students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. Additionally, the Kashmir University Alumni Association extends support to economically disadvantaged students, with preference given to orphans. This initiative ensures that financial constraints do not hinder the academic aspirations of talented students.
Through these programs, the University of Kashmir remains committed to fostering academic excellence and inclusivity.
