Ranchi University

Established on July 12, 1960, Ranchi University emerged as an autonomous institution following its separation from the erstwhile Bihar University. Over the decades, it has expanded significantly, now housing 22 postgraduate departments, 19 constituent colleges, and 47 affiliated colleges, serving a student body of approximately 160,000. The university has played a pivotal role in promoting higher education, particularly among tribal and marginalized communities.

Structural reforms have been integral to its growth, leading to its division into four independent institutions: Vinoba Bhave University (1992), Nilambar Pitambar University (2009), Kolhan University (2009), and Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (2019). Despite these bifurcations, Ranchi University remains a leading institution in Jharkhand, attracting students from neighboring states like West Bengal, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.

Committed to academic innovation, the university offers diverse programs in law, management, engineering, medicine, psychiatry, and yoga, alongside modern courses in film studies, aviation, and foreign languages. It has received prestigious accreditations, with three colleges recognized as ‘Colleges with Potential for Excellence’ (CPE) by the UGC and several departments securing UGC and CSIR research projects.
