The University of Mumbai, formerly known as the University of Bombay, is one of India's oldest and most prestigious institutions. Founded in 1857 as a result of the "Wood's Education Dispatch," it stands among the first three universities established in the country. The name of the university was changed in 1996 to reflect the renaming of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, following an official notification from the Government of Maharashtra, which was published in the Government Gazette on September 4, 1996.

Over the years, the University has earned recognition for its academic excellence. In 2001, it was awarded a five-star status, and in 2017, it achieved an 'A++' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), further solidifying its standing as a premier educational institution. The University has consistently contributed to the development of higher education in India, offering a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across various fields of study. Its commitment to quality education, research, and overall development continues to play a key role in shaping the academic landscape of India.
