Manipur University, initially established as a State University on June 5, 1980, under the Manipur University Act, 1980, became a Central University on October 13, 2005, through the Manipur University Act, 2005, passed by the Indian Parliament. The University comprises nine Schools of Studies, forty-seven departments, and seven Centres of Studies, with a student population of 7,396.
Presently, Manipur University is affiliated with 119 colleges, including three prominent medical colleges that serve both regional and national needs. The Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT), under the School of Engineering, is a constituent college of the University.
The University is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a 'B+' grade (2023). It plays a vital role in shaping the educational landscape of the state by contributing to academic, intellectual, social, and cultural growth. Manipur University offers a range of Gold Medals and Cash Awards to recognize academic excellence across various disciplines. These awards honor the top-performing students in different fields of study.
Among the Gold Medals, the School of Human and Environmental Sciences offers several, such as the Gurumayum Kanhaimacha Sharma Memorial Gold Medal for the top student in M.Sc. Anthropology, and the Nongthombam (O) Tombi Devi Memorial Gold Medal for first-class students in Forestry & Environmental Science. The School of Life Sciences awards medals like the Kangjam Ongbi Nungshisana Memorial Gold Medal for the highest scorer in M.Sc. Biochemistry. The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences has various awards, including the Prof. RK Tarachand Singh Memorial Gold Medal for the topper in the school’s M.Sc. exams.
