Nagaland University, established on September 6, 1994, is the 13th Central University in India and the only one in Nagaland. Before its establishment, Nagaland was part of the jurisdiction of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), with Kohima and SASRD-Medziphema functioning as its campuses.
Currently, the university has four campuses: the headquarters at Lumami in Zunheboto district, the Kohima campus at Meriema in Kohima district, the Medziphema campus focusing on Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development, and a temporary campus in Dimapur housing the Schools of Engineering & Technology and Management Studies. The university offers a wide range of academic programs, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. courses across disciplines like Arts, Commerce, Science, Engineering, Technology, and Management. It currently has 65 affiliated colleges across Nagaland.
Initially, Lumami could not serve as the headquarters due to inadequate infrastructure, so the university operated from Kohima for over 15 years. In 1997, the government sanctioned the establishment of academic departments at Lumami. Construction activities were undertaken to make the headquarters operational. By mid-2010, the shift from Kohima to Lumami was completed, marking the beginning of full-scale operations at the permanent headquarters.
Nagaland University offers a variety of scholarships to support its students' educational pursuits. The Post Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe (ST) Students is available to ST students from Nagaland whose parents' or guardians' annual income does not exceed ₹2,50,000. Eligible students must be enrolled in post-matric courses at recognized institutions within India.
The Nagaland State Merit Scholarship is designed for ST and indigenous students who have achieved a first division with at least 80% marks in HSLC/HSSLC or 70% in their degree final examinations. Applicants must be studying in recognized colleges or universities within India and are required to maintain the specified academic performance for scholarship renewal.
For those pursuing advanced studies, the Nagaland State Research Fellowship supports ST and indigenous scholars undertaking MPhil or PhD programs at recognized Indian universities.
Additionally, the NEC Stipend and Book Grant is available to both ST and general category students from Nagaland. ST applicants must have secured at least 60% in their last qualifying examination, while general category students need a minimum of 75%. This scholarship supports students enrolled in higher professional courses approved by the North Eastern Council (NEC).
Students are encouraged to apply for these scholarships through the Common Scholarship Portal of Nagaland, which serves as a single window for various state and central scholarship schemes.
By leveraging these opportunities, Nagaland University aims to promote academic excellence and provide financial assistance to deserving students across diverse disciplines.
