Annamalai University, one of South India’s largest and oldest institutions, is renowned for its disciplinary diversity and extensive student enrollment. Established in 1929 by philanthropist Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar, the university spans a 1000-acre campus and comprises about 50 departments across eight faculties. Located in Annamalainagar, near Chidambaram, the university has been pivotal in the social, cultural, and economic upliftment of society.

To promote Tamil language and literature, Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar founded Sri Minakshi College and other educational institutions in the early 1920s. These institutions were later integrated into the university, which was officially founded on January 1, 1929, as the first university established by a private philanthropist. Until 2013, the university was governed by the Annamalai University Act, 1928. The Annamalai University Act, 2013, passed in September 2013, expanded its jurisdiction, allowing it to affiliate 81 colleges across several districts.
