The foundation of Bankura University marked the fulfillment of a long-standing aspiration for the people of Bankura. Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Education Minister, this institution was established to elevate the academic and cultural fabric of this region in West Bengal.
Formally created through the West Bengal Act XIX of 2013, the university received the Governor’s assent as published in the Kolkata Gazette on January 6, 2014.
Dedicated to promoting higher education, Bankura University also aims to preserve and advance the region’s folk traditions and foster sustainable rural and tribal development. Located in the culturally rich area of Mallabhum, the university draws from the legacy of Dokra art, the brilliance of mathematician Subhankar, the historic town of Bishnupur, and the works of artists Jamini Roy and Ramkinkar Baij.
The university operates across four campuses: Purandarpur, Puabagan, Mithila, and Chhandar.
Bankura University offers a diverse array of scholarships and financial aid programs to support both meritorious and economically disadvantaged students:
Kanyashree (K³): A state-funded scheme for female students encouraging retention in higher education.
Swami Vivekananda Merit‑cum‑Means: A West Bengal government scholarship for academically outstanding yet financially needy students.
Post‑Matric OASIS (SC/ST/OBC): Grants for postgraduate students from reserved categories to pursue higher education.
AIKYASHREE Scholarships: Multiple scholarships via West Bengal Minorities’ Development & Finance Corporation, including post‑matric, merit‑cum‑means, talent support stipends, and minority-specific Swami Vivekananda awards.
Sitaram Jindal Foundation PG Scholarships: Category-based grants for postgraduate scholars.
Other fellowships and international opportunities: Including the Ravi Shankaran Fellowships, Tata Trusts’ Partition Archive grants, and more.
Applications are submitted through the university’s scholarship office, typically routed via departments and the Registrar’s office for verification.
This structure helps ensure students from all backgrounds gain crucial support for their academic journeys.
