Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), headquartered in Mohanpur, Nadia, was founded in 1974. Over the past four decades, it has significantly contributed to agricultural education, research, and extension in West Bengal. Initially, the university consisted of two faculties - Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences.
To address the agricultural needs of North Bengal, which differs in agro-ecological conditions from South Bengal, a campus was established at Pundibari, Cooch Behar in 1980. In 1995, the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences was separated to form the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences. Later, in 2001, the North Bengal campus evolved into Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV), serving districts like Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Darjeeling.
Subsequently, BCKV introduced two additional faculties - Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering -alongside Agriculture. To expand access to undergraduate agricultural education, BCKV also set up two new colleges: one in Burdwan (2014) and another in Bankura (2015), focusing exclusively on agriculture studies.
