Diamond Harbour Women’s University, established in 2013 under West Bengal Act XXXVII of 2012, is the first women’s university in the region. It was created to provide greater educational access and empowerment to women. Recognized by the UGC under Section 2(f) in 2016, the university began academic operations in 2014–15 with postgraduate courses in six disciplines.

Now located on its own campus near Sarisha on Diamond Harbour Road, it houses 13 departments under the faculties of Arts and Science. These include Bengali, English, History, Political Science, Women’s Studies, Physics, Zoology, and others. MPhil and PhD programs were introduced from 2017–18.

The university also supports students through NET/SET coaching, cultural and sports events, placements, and skill development initiatives. Strategically situated near Kolkata and the Sunderbans, the university aims to foster academic excellence and women’s empowerment. It envisions education as a tool for social transformation, especially for women striving for independence and leadership.

Diamond Harbour Women’s University offers a robust scholarship program to support meritorious students and those from underprivileged backgrounds:

University & Government Scholarships

Swami Vivekananda Merit‑cum‑Means (SVMCM): Supports students from families earning less than ₹2.5 lakh annually, with a minimum of 60% marks.

Swami Vivekananda Merit Scholarhip (SVMSM): Specifically assists non-NET M.Phil. and Ph.D. candidates.

Kanyashree & Aikyashree: State scholarships aimed at female students and reserved-category students of West Bengal.

Oasis: Available to SC/ST/OBC students and those from low-income families.

Specialized Scholarships
Indira Gandhi PG Scholarship for Single Girl Child: For eligible postgraduate female students.

NHFDC Scheme: National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation scholarship for differently-abled students.
