The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Kalyani was established to develop top-tier talent in the field of Information Technology and promote innovation across various sectors. It aims to become a globally recognized academic institution offering high-quality education and research, while producing industry-ready professionals equipped to meet evolving market demands. The institute also seeks to nurture an entrepreneurial ecosystem that leverages the region’s intellectual resources to create new technologies, products, and intellectual property.

IIIT Kalyani was founded under a Not-for-Profit Public-Private Partnership (N-PPP) model, supported by the Ministry of Education (Government of India), the Government of West Bengal, and industry collaborators like Coal India Ltd. and the Rolta Foundation. Funding is shared in a 50:35:15 ratio among these entities. The state government has also allocated 50 acres for the permanent campus. Recognized as an Institute of National Importance (INI) since 2017, IIIT Kalyani currently operates from its temporary location at Webel IT Park.

Tuition Fee Waivers: Merit- and need-based waivers are available through both central and state governments. The institute aids in applying via platforms like the National Scholarship Portal, as well as specific schemes from Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal.

Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF): PhD candidates receive ₹2 lakh/year through this prestigious national fellowship .

AICTE & UGC scholarships: Students can access financial support under merit-cum-means, special provisions for women, disabled, and SC/ST categories, and the Ishan Uday scheme for those from North-Eastern regions.

Post‑Matric and Minority Scholarships: Central schemes fund SC/ST, OBC, minority, and differently-abled students, providing both annual and monthly stipends.

Junior Research Fellowship: Supported by a West Bengal Government‑supported project (SASVI), select CSE scholars receive ₹25,000/month.
